Students from various technical schools in the Lehigh Valley region showcased their skills during The Lehigh Valley Section of the American Welding Society (AWS) 47th Annual Student Welding Competition.  The event was hosted by Northampton Community College on March 3, 2017. Among the competitors were Matt Ragle and Jensen Scott, who are both in their third year of the MBIT Welding Technology program and seniors at Central Bucks East High School.  This was Matt’s second time competing so he was excited to “give it another shot and do better than last year”. Matt placed 3rd overall in the competition and earned a AWS Structural Code D1.1 Certification, Auto Darkening Shield, and a gift certificate. He also won nearly $750.00 worth of prizes for his excellent work in the competition. Matt will be leaving our area to join the U.S. Navy after graduating from high school in June. This was Jensen’s first time competing and he felt the welding labs used for the competition were fantastic and he was grateful for the opportunity. Jensen will be attending the University of Utah to study mechanical engineering when he graduates in June.

Matt and Jensen were both honored for their participation in the competition at the 47th Annual Student Welding Competition Awards Banquet in Hellertown, PA on March 28, 2017. Joined by their Instructor, Mr. Paul Carney, and their family, the students received recognition from the American Welding Society and learned of the competition results. The students had an opportunity to meet Mr. John R. Bray President of the AWS, who was the honorary guest speaker for the evening.
